Truffs @ Telok Ayer Street

If truffles were truly opulent gifts from God, then Chocolate Truffles must be their finest replication.

And over at Truffs, located at the 2nd storey of a shophouse – just a stone’s throw away from Amoy Food Centre – one could find perhaps the richest, and conceivably the most natural chocolate truffles around.

Truffs

A self-confessed purist at heart, chocolatier cum owner Teng Ei Liang believed that chocolate truffles are the purest way to consume chocolate. Therefore one would only be able to find the truffles at Truffs with traditional Chocolate Ganache center – and none other fanciful fillings such as liquor, fruits or nuts.

For a true dark chocolate lover, the 66% Antilles Dark Chocolate made from a combination of cocoa beans from the Caribbean, revealed a nutty aftertaste that HFB thought would made a lovely accompaniment to a cuppa.

Unexpectedly, the 70% Honduras Dark Chocolate though supposedly to be more intense, tasted lighter on the palate to him – perhaps due to the fruity and floral smack that was lacking in the former. Brilliant!

More surprises awaited HFB when he was also introduced to their Chocolate Cake ($70.00 for 1kg). In comparison to Lana Cakeshop and Awfully Chocolate, HFB thought the slight lacked of sweetness in Truffs’ version was a blessing in disguise – one is truly able to savour the chocolatey goodness of it all. HFB liked the fact that the sponge cake within was well moist, giving it a richer bite and texture.

Considering that the retail outlet was furbished like a luxury kitchen with nice bar stools, it was perhaps disappointing that one is unable to linger around and have a cup of beverage while indulging in their chocolates and cakes (HFB was told they do not have the necessary license to operate as a café, plus operations is an issue).

However one should definitely consider having their Hot Chocolate ($6.00) for takeaways. A smoother version of a very rich Italian hot chocolate, this was perhaps one of the best versions HFB has tasted in Singapore.

And while one is at it, why not pamper the people around you with a lovely packaged box of original handmade chocolate truffles as gifts – $24.00 for a box of 9 and $43.00 for a box of 18.

Extravagant perhaps, but guaranteed divine.

Disclaimer: No ratings would be given, as this is an invited taste test. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ei Liang, Indra, Hui Ying and Truffs for their hospitality.

The chocolate cake looks really good. Pity they don't sell it by the slice. Or do they?

Why don't they apply for cafe license?

They are!! You can really taste the chocolate in them and I love it for not being too sweet that it overwhelms your palate.

Unfortunately, they don't sell it by slice - only comes in 1kg, 1.5kg and 2kg.

The owner is stilling holding on to a good FT paying job and none of his staffs (read: friends and relatives)wants the hassle of running it as a cafe. So really its running more like a retail outlet.

@Sparkling: I believe there's only one pricing. That's the standard packaging that comes along with the chocolates when you purchase it.

@linjie: They are pretty addictive I must say. :)
